i was watching mad max 3, and they were using pig dung to generate
electricity. and i started to wonder how effective that would be, and
how would it be done.
i assume the methane is used to heat water to steam and the generate
The Most Dangerous Job17 Sep 2005 20:04 GMT16
http://money.cnn.com/2005/08/26/pf/jobs_jeopardy/index.htm
CNN just published a list of the 10 most dangerous occupations from
2004.  Number one was loggers.  Number 2 was aircraft pilots.
Commercial fishing moved to #3.  I remember when it was #1.  Farming and
"Americans don't live in tents."17 Sep 2005 17:37 GMT120
One thing that struck me as pictures came out of New Orleans was that
there were no tents.  In any third-world country with a climate like New
Orleans, there would have been steps taken to stabilize the condition of
the survivors:  tents for shelter, Oxfam-type water stations, ...

Survivalists Abuzz?17 Sep 2005 03:50 GMT36
Has anybody else noticed a big uptick in survivalist activity in the
wake of Katrina?  Last week I noticed lots of surplus military style
vehicles on the road, driven by guys in some pretty strange gear.
I bet they though TEOTWAWKI was here.

I found this article interesting:

Apparently a survival situation in a tropical climate presents
difficulties that I never envisioned.  For instance, the only baby wipes

a use for them.

Red pines for dock posts15 Sep 2005 19:52 GMT7
Years ago I used fresh cut red pines for fence posts.  After a couple years
they rotted at ground level (to be expected).
However I've been seeing dock installers using red pines for posts.  Some
have been sunk into lakebed and others are being used in bogs.  Today I
New Orleans ... The New Atlantis?15 Sep 2005 03:01 GMT12
With predicted sea level rise, wetland loss, subsidence, and the
absence of restoration programs, the future of New Orleans appears
bleak. Research from University of New Orleans scientists examine the
processes driving catastrophic coastal conditions and the breakdown of
Road & Stock SALT problems15 Sep 2005 01:40 GMT8
I have a few bags of rock salt from last winter in my garage, and a
few bags of stick salt in my feedroom in the barn.  No matter where I
put it, water leaks out of the bag and onto the floor, then the bag
gets soaked and breaks.  There has got to nbe some sort of way to dela
Earthing a generator14 Sep 2005 22:30 GMT16
I've just bought a cheapo Honda clone generator off eBay. It's a great
machine.. . . up to a point!
But I wonder whether it should be earthed/grounded and if so, how? The
supplier is playing silly beggers and won't give a straight answer.

small water company issues14 Sep 2005 17:58 GMT11
I live in a community with around 150 homes. We have a small water
company that was incorporated many years ago. Honesty I just don't like
the way they run things.
They meet once a year, and only hand out a generic agenda a few days
