| For the brambles problem | 31 May 2004 16:04 GMT | 3 |
For your brambles problem, I would suggest a pair of goats. They will eat down to the roots, and they can and will eat about anything-wherein lies the problem, watch them carefully or they will eat things that you don't want them to.-Jitney

| Killing brambles responsibly | 31 May 2004 15:17 GMT | 4 |
On my land I have a small young wood. I neglected it for a couple of years as a result of which it was overrun by brambles. I now cut them at least once a year with a brushcutter, but they still grow back. Is there any safe chemical I can apply to the brambles which will not

| Pileated Woodpecker | 31 May 2004 01:03 GMT | 39 |
Anything that scares them? They are a beautiful bird but I've got one that is annoying me to no end. It's under the eaves pecking away at the siding, probably looking for bugs, and making a lot of racket. Haven't been able to get up to see if it's doing any damage as there

| Haitch Reader's overworked, exhausted swearword | 29 May 2004 20:19 GMT | 1 |
Haitch keeps calling me a "sociopath". He doesn't know what the word means. He saw it someplace once, and he likes the ring of it, and thinks it makes him sound scholarly. The self-important bumpkin is wrong, and he

| Sump Pump - what type? | 29 May 2004 13:09 GMT | 2 |
We have a septic tank, and I've just realised that if the pump should fail, the waste will backup into the basement! What kind of sump pump should I purchase a) a basic one like those installed in most modern houses (approx $70), or b) one that is capable of moving

| George Washington & Reason! | 29 May 2004 02:54 GMT | 2 |
I have been posting the passage, which follows from George Washington's Farewell address, at numerous web venues, as an answer to the flawed policy advocated by both major parties in Washington today, for dealing with other countries. "First in War, First in Peace," Washington ...

| History | 28 May 2004 19:06 GMT | 16 |
I own 38 acres of forgotten rural property that I've been taming back to pasture over the past few years. Often I drive around the area and notice that a lot of the roads seem to be the last names of people. I went down to my local courthouse the other day and did a title search

| Strange electrical story | 28 May 2004 15:35 GMT | 1 |
Story from years ago: My wife's parents' house had a washer in the basement, with a 3-prong grounded cord. Her dad wanted to be "extra safe" so he attached a wire to the cabinet of the washer and the other end to a water pipe, so it was basically double-grounded.

| Stretching Woven Wire Fence | 28 May 2004 02:49 GMT | 4 |
We have been replacing old woven wire fences with new ones. To stretch the fence, we have been using two old 2x6's. Basically we sandwich the fence between the 2x6's and bolt the 2x6's together. We attach chains to the boards and pull the fence with either the tractor

| calf nuts | 28 May 2004 02:08 GMT | 8 |
I am a literary translator and am in confusion about the term 'calf nuts.' Can anyone describe this 'thing' to me? I am not even sure if it is a kind of nut (of what plant?) or a kind of fodder. Latin equivalent
