Why street lights on all night?07 Jan 2009 21:32 GMT41
Often wondered why street lights on all night. Wasted energy etc. Also
unnecessary pollution where electrcity is generated by coal or other
fossil fuel. Could save some small municipalities some cost?
Apparently a German town/city has decided to turn them off.
Sheetrock a ceiling with uneven joists07 Jan 2009 21:27 GMT9
I am having the kitchen ceiling replaced in a old house that I bought and
that I will be renting out.  The old ceiling has been taken down and what is
left is the ceiling joists.  It used to be a wood lath and plaster ceiling.
I can see where they used some strips of lath to pack ...
TV Programming info from antenna + converter box07 Jan 2009 20:53 GMT7
I recently dropped costly cable TV service and made the switch to an
antenna with a digital converter box.  I am very pleased with the
results (we get about 20 channels, about a dozen of which I actually
use).  I have a Zenith DTT901 DTV converter box.  I am curious about
Second Water Heater07 Jan 2009 20:52 GMT9
My kitchen is a LONG way from my electric water heater, which is under
the floor beneath the downstairs bathroom. I'm thinking about adding a
second water heater under the floor under the kitchen sink. (A tankless
water heater is not being considered, and there is no inside ...

The year we lose our TV signals07 Jan 2009 20:35 GMT299
Welcome to 2009.  The year we lose our TV signals.  What a way to
start the year, knowing in another month and a half, we will lose our
tv reception, unless we subscribe to costly cable or satellite tv.  Oh
yea, they tell us we can get convertors and even give us coupons worth
Return Air Duct07 Jan 2009 19:56 GMT15
The return air duct on my upstairs heat pump (the same one with the
thermostat issue also discussed here) sucks air through the filter at
such a high velocity that the filter is not of much value. (It also
pulls the bathroom door up against it, if I'm not careful.) The present
Gas Furnace - what parts to stock for emergencies?07 Jan 2009 18:51 GMT25
What parts are good to keep on hand for a gas furnace? I have 2 Trane/
American Standard gas furnaces in the basement, about 7 years old. I
just replaced the pressure switches, and the ignitor on one of them
(went bad at 6 PM on New Year's Eve...). So today I am ordering a
Washer Standpipe Backup/Solution?07 Jan 2009 18:20 GMT11
I have a problem with my clothes washer overflowing the 1.5"
standpipe.  I've read that others have this problem.  In the past,
chemical clog removers have been ineffectual at clearing the lint and
soap which (I assume) is partially responsible for the backup.  I've
Door swelled from moisture won't close07 Jan 2009 17:51 GMT12
I have an exterior door which is wood (with a glass window in the
middle). It was unstained wood when it was installed so I stained it
with a stain/waterproofing product. I think, unfortunately, I forgot
to stain the bottom of the door.
shimming door hinge07 Jan 2009 17:44 GMT6
This does not seem right to me -- but it did resolve my issue.
I have an exterior door that the door used to be 'cocked' a bit in the
frame such that the weather seal did not seal well all around the
door.  There was a gap along the bottom of the latch side.  The botton

3 220V circuits
4 110V circuits
When one of the 220V breakers is on, all the 110 circuits display some
basic home maintenance guide07 Jan 2009 16:21 GMT9
We just bought a home built in 2000 located in a summertime humid
climate.  We used to live in a dry climate where water damage was
pretty much unheard of.
It looks to be about ready for paint, and the front covered porch
I'm opening a tv repair business07 Jan 2009 15:11 GMT6
I'm opening a tv repair business.
On February 17, 2009 I will open my doors to business.
I know there will be many customers the next day.
I plan to make a fortune.  By the end of March, I should be able to
Oil furnace07 Jan 2009 13:17 GMT13
I have an oil hot water furnace that when its on, runs weather or not
heat is needed just to maintain the temp.
I want to change it to a cold start system so I can leave it on but not
run unless my wood hot water furnace goes cold if I happen to overstay a
