Church deep cleaning (off topic)24 Jul 2009 17:13 GMT38
Later this year, the church is having a "deep cleaning"
project. I went to the one last year. Couple guys pushing a
vacuum cleaner, and several crews of people washing windows.
The carpets all got vacuumed several times, and the windows
Creator of WD-40 dies24 Jul 2009 16:28 GMT12
See http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/22/business/22barry1.html
(registration probably not required; if it is, use Bugmenot)
And to all those naysayers here (you know--"WD-40 is nothing but
crap!"), the article says:
Gluing aluminum to glass: 2nd go-round24 Jul 2009 16:16 GMT7
In our last episode, I asked about sticky substances to adhere an
aluminum strip to the bottom of a glass shower door. Thanks to all who
gave good answers in that thread.
So just to report that I got some stuff from Loctite called "Glass Glue"
Motion security light recommendation (to replace old low end Heath-Zenith)24 Jul 2009 05:41 GMT6
One of my low-end Home Depot Heath-Zenith Motion Security Lights just
went bad after about 5 years. The light sensor stopped working though
the motion sensor and lights themselves work fine (see below for my
troubleshooting). In any case, the light sensor circuit failure seems
Inclusion of Clause -- Missed Deadline -- How?24 Jul 2009 03:21 GMT13
One of my friends just finished a bathroom remodel where the contractor not
only finished ahead of schedule but undercost. My friend mentioned that he
always puts two clauses in any contracts; a deadline clause with associated
penalties and an ahead of schedule clause.
Garage Door Opener receiiver.  What is the normal load on one?24 Jul 2009 02:18 GMT2
Would the normal load of a garage door opener, on the GDO receiver
relay, be more than the current it takes to close a simple relay?
Using 16 volts AC for the relay coil, through the normally open dry
relay contacts of the GDO receiver?

Give me a chance of success here...(you garage door pros)
I have an Al door, 18+ ft?, 20 years old, that bows in the middle
(when the door is in the open position).  Because of it, the door
'bangs' when the door is shut.  The bang is caused by the drooping
Holddown screws for backfed main breakers23 Jul 2009 18:41 GMT4
Regarding the thread above about the C-H electric service panel, I'm now
convinced that the holddown screws on the main breakers are required and
should be there.
So this is for a new panel; what about older existing ones? F'rinstance,
Oldest running House AC unit23 Jul 2009 15:24 GMT18
I've got a house in Phoenix with the original Goetle AC package unit
on the roof, 3 ton.  The house was built in 1971 so the unit is 38
years old. The condenser fan was replaced 4 times and an external
crankcase heater was strapped to it 25 years ago when the internal one
Thermal Expansion tank for water heater - is it necessary?23 Jul 2009 12:19 GMT16
I was just reading an article about the "importance" of a thermal
expansion tank to extend the lifetime of water heaters, T&P release
valves, hot water fixtures, etc.
On the other hand, we have never had one in our house or where I grew
Conduit23 Jul 2009 07:12 GMT2
Can one of you code book guys tell me if it is required by code to put
single wires in conduit? I am putting a sub panel in a building and want to
know if it is required to put the three #2 wires which will be feeding it in
conduit from the originating circuit breaker panel, ...
HF Oscillating Multi-Function Tool23 Jul 2009 06:56 GMT19
Actually got to use it today for a classic rot application - replace bottom
couple of feet of brick molding at garage. Personally, I'd just replace the
entire length but it was for someone el$queeke.
It worked awesome. Nice clean straight cut in no time. The fact that it's
Please help. drywall dust damage23 Jul 2009 06:54 GMT19
Our basement flooded in January and we had to replace the sheet rock.
There was also an area of popcorn ceiling at the entry into the
basement.  We hired some one to resheet rock and remove popcorn ceiling
finish.  We had put some plastic up, but did not realize the devastation
