Toilet flap drops too soon31 Dec 2008 22:55 GMT15
The flap at the bottom of the tank drops before the tank empties
completely.  Is the some sort of adjustment that controls how fast the
flap closes?
Installing Backerboard over dry rot31 Dec 2008 22:25 GMT3
I'm installing ceramic tile in a bathroom.  Near the shower pan is a
small (3"x4") square that is a little soft and has some dryrot from a
leak many years ago.  Is it ok to use a larger area of backerboard
that spans this space?  Anyone ever done this?
Washing Machine drains into Shower31 Dec 2008 18:18 GMT19
I have a washing machine and a shower in my basement.  They are separated by
a wall.  When the washing machine drains the water comes up the shower
drain.  Most of the time it doesn't overflow and after a few minutes the
shower drains itself.  Every once in a while it will ...
Tempering tank for hot water system31 Dec 2008 17:56 GMT52
Ok guys, pick this one apart.....  I have a wood stove in my
basement.  I just replaced my old 52 gal electric hot water tank with
a new 40 gal model.  I am planning to use my old stripped down tank as
a tempering tank ahead of my new heater and place it as close to my

very old, so they call it "Old Lang's sign".

Pipe dope on steam heat fittings?31 Dec 2008 16:43 GMT9
I recently bought a house that has a one-pipe steam heat system.  It was a
vacant bank-owned property that I bought as-is, and I will be renting the
property out.  I never had steam heat before.  The heating system works well
but two or three of the radiators have a very slight drip ...
Drain lever in bath won't stay all the way open31 Dec 2008 16:37 GMT4
Hello folks.  In my bath/shower, when I flip the lever to open the
drain, it pops back up a bit which leaves the drain partially closed
and slows the flow of water down the drain.  Any idea how to fix
this?  I flipped it opened then closed a bunch of times hoping that
Capping off burners on steam boiler to reduce BTU output31 Dec 2008 16:33 GMT5
A friend of mine has a Weil Mclain gas steam boiler that was put in
about 15 years ago. Apparantly whoever put it in oversized the job and
put in a 300,000 BTU unit, when it should have been a 200,000 BTU unit
according to a heating specialist that recently surveyed the house.
Overcoming the spring of wires in electrical boxes31 Dec 2008 16:29 GMT5
What are some of the tricks for overcoming the elastic resistance of
wires when putting them in electrical boxes. The obvious ones are:
having larger boxes and having fewer wires. And having slack of just
the right length. I have also learned that twisting the outlets
Annoying washing machine problem31 Dec 2008 13:29 GMT8
My 10 tear old washing machine just developed an issue with the little
lever that SHOULD be depressed by the little pointer on the lid to
allow it to wash/spin.  Before, when you closed the kid, you heard a
little click, but now the little lever isn't being pushed down
Why Vacuum Relief Valves on Water Heaters31 Dec 2008 13:07 GMT9
I was advised to also replace the vacuum relief valve when I recently
had to replace our home's (leaking) water heater. Since the part was
cheap enough and I'd never thought to replace it in the 23 years (and
two previous water heater replacements by me.) since its original

How to properly use a hammer on nails?31 Dec 2008 04:05 GMT51
I rarely use hammers & nails as I typically prefer to use screws over nails.
However once in a while I need to use nails.
I have to do some mending of framing in the attic and I need to nail wood
gussets to a joint.  The space in the attic is tight and angle is awkward.
