How to terminate low voltage wiring07 Feb 2004 05:00 GMT4
I'm replacing my thermostat wire and I noticed HD has a nice BX 18ga
non-UL (!) thermostat wire which would do very nicely for the exposed
portion but how do I go from the BX which would normally terminate in
a standard box to (say) the thermostat where the cable just comes in
heat won't turn off07 Feb 2004 04:32 GMT3
I have a gas furnace. When I woke up this morning it was about 80F in the
house, even though the thermostat was set at 68F. After turning the
thermostat all the way down the heat was still blasting and I had to shut
the gas valve on the furnace to shut the thing down. Before I call ...

where to get storm door hinges07 Feb 2004 03:13 GMT1
I have a friend whose aluminum storm door hinges have worn
out.  The rest of the door is in good shape and she would rather not
replace it, but we're having no luck find the hinges.
These three-inch butt hinges have one leaf narrower than the
Heat Pump Problem07 Feb 2004 02:53 GMT2
I have a 13 year old heat pump (rheem) that was never properly taken care
before I bought this house.  Last summer the AC wouldn't start so I called the
service worker out and he got it working again and told me that he would be
very surprised if it lasted through the winter. ...

Foundation sealer that works from the inside on cracks?07 Feb 2004 01:57 GMT3
I know that most people tell me that none of them work but for the time
being I'm not going to jack hammer out the patio where I need to go
down to tar the hole from the outside. It's a small crack that leaks or
really leaches small amounts of water only when it's really teaming
Hate Cold Showers--Anybody know of a timed shut-off device?07 Feb 2004 01:52 GMT11
I have a newer 40 gal natural gas hot water tank.  It puts out about
45 minutes of hot water for showers set at about 130 degrees
Farenheit.  That equals about 1 shower for teenage daughter and 1/2 a
shower for me--forget about anybody else in the house!  I have a low
Cracked basement wall.07 Feb 2004 01:36 GMT5
Have moved into a new condo. The basement walls are cast concrete; the house
sits on very porous soil/dirt and the grade falls steeply all around. We
have had very heavy rains during the past few months. No evidence of wet or
damp basement except:-

Anti-slam / door damper devices?06 Feb 2004 23:26 GMT5
I am looking for something to keep my children, my wife, and all other
visitors from slamming my front door.  I found something called a door
damper - dictator.com makes them, but they only sell to OEMs.  This
device attaches to door frame and door and consists of a hydraulic cam
Just got new external door - what kind of paint do I use on it?06 Feb 2004 23:03 GMT13
I have a new wood-core external door that was just put in (new
doorframe as well) - it has metal sheeting over the wood and a window
in the middle.  I am told that the white color on the door is primer,
not paint, and that I must paint the door to protect it from the
Ground Wires in Outlet Boxes06 Feb 2004 22:42 GMT1
I noticed this question of wire gauge came up earlier but here is mine:
The lady next door asked me to install three prong (grounded) outlets for
her to replace the two prong outlets in her house.  Most of them were
installed in the late fifties but in each box there was bare copper ...
Ok to splice oven wiring?06 Feb 2004 22:41 GMT22
I'm moving an oven to a different wall in my kitchen, so I need to
extend the wiring to the new location.  Currently, the oven is hard
wired to a 3 wire service (40 amp breaker) located in a junction box
that is in turn connected to the service panel.  My question is, is it
