I am constantly arguing with my coworkers about putting pipe dope on unions

I have a 2-1/2" PVC threaded male going into an in ground pool pump.  This
was leaking, so I pulled out the old piece, cleaned the threads, Teflon
taped up a new piece and threaded it in.  Damn if it doesn't still leak
(though, not as bad).  As a non-plumber I can sure appreciate ...

I replaced the kitchen faucet and used preassembled supply lines of metal
mesh over some sort of flexible tubing.  There is an objectionable taste
from these lines when the faucet is first turned on.  Most people don't
notice the taste, but some of us do.
