My husband was crawling around under out house and discovered spots of
"stuff" growing on our house joists.  The substance was light brown/tan
in color, like unstained light wood.  It looked like a soft and fluffy
coating.  When touched, the substance smeared (did not flake, or ...

Bathtub on Wood Shims?27 Oct 2003 12:36 GMT6
Noticed that new cast iron bathtub was set on a wall ledger and front ledge
and feet are shimmed on wood shims for level.  I thought that bathtubs are
generally set between concrete channels in case of earthquakes.  Does the
tub supported on ledgers on both sides and sitting on wood ...
Water Softener Problems27 Oct 2003 05:14 GMT5
I have a water softener that's probably 18 or so years old.  Its apparently one
of the early demand units - goes by water usage to recharge rather than time...
It USED to work fine for three of us, but lately, even though there are only two
of us living in the house,  it doesn't ...
Beware of Home Depot CF bulbs26 Oct 2003 21:59 GMT9
Back in July we bought 15 Sylvania compact florescent bulbs at
H-E-B and Target, after deciding to thoroughly "re-bulb" our
house.  Later that month we needed an extra, so I picked one
up at Home Depot.  They had absolutely no brand-name bulbs,
buying a new roof/sales tactics26 Oct 2003 18:04 GMT8
I just spoke to a home contractor about a new roof. I was impressed
with the company and I felt that the guy justified the price pretty
well. However, he immediately offered several discounts and reduced
the price, but we had to make a decision right there and then. We

Hi, I found out there is a vertical crack on the foundation wall
(poured concrete) all the way from ceiling to floor. It is on the 40'
foundation wall, in the middle of garage, close to steel pieces in the
concrete, about 1/8" wide. The foundation is only 2 months old and the

MLS Listing price versus selling price in the northeast26 Oct 2003 04:21 GMT4
I'm looking around SE Massachusetts currently.  The market has definately
slowed from all accounts in this area.  I'm currently looking at one home
that has been for sale for almost a year.  It's still listed at 10% more
than a house that sold two doors down that has unobstructed ...
Paint Removal External Brickwork25 Oct 2003 16:10 GMT6
Can anyone out there give me any ideas how to remove what looks like
two or three coats of paint from a Victorian house? Nothing readily
available appears to be able to shift it. Someone has mentioned a
place in the west country that does a specialist remover if you send
HOA giving grief about fence24 Oct 2003 21:57 GMT35
Please help us in our new 'situation'. Our HOA is giving us grief over
our fence color. We painted our fence a light oak color stain TWO AND
HALF years ago. The HOA sent us a notice yesterday saying the color is
unacceptable. Our brick color is gray. They said the color of the

I'm considering buying a home in Illinois that is covered on all sides

soft substrate under one window.
