The truth about Martin Luther King on MLK day15 Feb 2010 02:05 GMT10
The Truth About "Martin Luther King, Jr."
WHEN THE COMMUNISTS TOOK OVER a country, one of the first things that
they did was to confiscate all the privately-held weapons, to deny the
people the physical ability to resist tyranny. But even more insidious
Fungus on tree stump15 Feb 2010 01:06 GMT12
I had a tree cut down a couple of years ago.  Stump still in situ.
It has developed some fungi, but I don't think it's honey fungus; too
orangey.  I've seen HF before and Googled pictures.
Any ideas what I might do to get rid of it?

Seed Potatoes15 Feb 2010 00:03 GMT7
Reading the Kitchen Garden I notice you can now buy seed potatoes direct
from a Scottish grower.
Their URL is...   www.jbaseedpotatoes.co.uk
Handy if you can't get to a Potato day.
White Cabbages14 Feb 2010 23:17 GMT6
I know this is not strictly a home-growing question, but does anyone know
why the "sweetheart" or "pointed" cabbages in the supermarkets are suddenly
white instead of green?  In the winter, you need to eat your greens, not
whites.

Many hectares of land belonging to many farmers are now no longer
needed for growing peas, thanks to a cancelled contract from the chief
customer, Birds Eye, who has lost its own chief customer in Italy.
My husband heard of this today at a lunch for growers and looking it up

Planting seeds14 Feb 2010 16:44 GMT13
What kind of soil/compost do people have most success with for planting
seeds?  I've not had great success with anything I've tried so far, up to
and including home mixed compost, worm poo compost and B+Q peat free
compost.  We have a John Innes' compost outside which I thought was ...
Growing On Herbs14 Feb 2010 14:34 GMT7
A couple of times I have bought growing herbs in pots  like Basil
,Parsley or Coriander etc from supermarkets and while they are fine
and very healthy when you buy them they never survive more than a few
days . I'm assuming that they are forced to get to the "selling" stage
Raised garden in Victorian conversion14 Feb 2010 13:24 GMT1

I thought some of you might be interested in this although I did post
a bit about it elsewhere, so apologies to those who have already seen
it.  There’s a very long pre-amble to this – in fact it is likely to
be a very, very long post, so be warned.  This may turn out to be more
Semi OT: Electric fences13 Feb 2010 22:11 GMT22
Just wondering what your experiences have been with electric fences?
I recently set up my own electric fence in one paddock, for a mix of
creatures ranging from chooks (yes, chooks!) to sheep and goats. Years
ago I managed an avocado farm, which also ran some cattle - I used to
lean-to greenhouse or cold frame kit?13 Feb 2010 18:55 GMT6
I am in a situation where we are buying a new house.  It is currently
undergoing roughly $23k in repairs under the FHA 203k rehab loan
program.  After they are done, we will move in, probably about the end
of February.
