Watercress06 Jul 2008 10:05 GMT60
Is it possible to grow watercress without running water?  Has anyone
tried, and if so how can it be done?  Pieces of bought watercress will
root in water, but is there a way of growing them on?  I often end up
wasting the last of a packet.

A lily question05 Jul 2008 23:21 GMT15
Some nearly forty years ago a dear friend, now dead, gave me a lily bulb (or
whatever). It regularly produced a few large purple flowers. I've no idea
what it is apart from that, it's just known as 'Nana Rowe's Lily' and we're
very fond of it.
Amazon Lily/Eucharist Lily05 Jul 2008 19:21 GMT4
I am unable to find one of these anywhere, except one for sale which is  too
much money for too small a plant.
Does anyone have  a larger one?  I don't mind paying if I can afford it, and
paying for postage too.
Base for greenhouse05 Jul 2008 18:09 GMT10
I am moving my greenhouse from the darkiest, shadiest part of the garden
to a sunnier area. I decided on a concrete base as I never grow anything
in the soil of the greenhouse, and I thought it would be more rat-proof!
We live in a very windy area and so the greenhouse needs to ...
My capsicum and aubergine plants05 Jul 2008 15:30 GMT26
Well, they grew to be sturdy, multiple leaved plants, over 12" tall and with
a big spread. They're now in maximum size pots on the greenhouse staging and
I've staked the tallest - need some more canes <note to self: ask Spouse to
make something>.

Touchweeder - gone forever ?05 Jul 2008 14:28 GMT3
I've just used the last of my Touchweeder and on trying to buy some more
discovered it's banned !
I can't seem to find anything similar. Does anyone know of a replacement
that works in the same way.
What are 'greens'?05 Jul 2008 13:37 GMT24
I was talking to the missus tonight re my recent produce growing
experiment and she used the term 'greens'.
I understood the term to be a generic one that related to most green /
leafy, typically eaten cooked vegetables but primarily cabbage (but
beware parsnips05 Jul 2008 13:04 GMT68
My daughter let some of her last years parsnips go to seed and they were in
her opinion very attractive plants. Yesterday she decided she needed the
room and so pulled  them up. A passer by told her that in that state they
were very dangerous and could cause health problems, She ...
Frustrated!!  (cows & corn!)05 Jul 2008 12:41 GMT1
I was talking with some friends to today and we were discussing our
gardens. My comment to them was that I was really hopeful for mine this
year and I mentioned how much better my garden was doing this year than
the last even though we are still somewhat considered in drought
After the mexican primrose05 Jul 2008 03:52 GMT3
Two years ago an area in our front yard was invaded by the beautiful
mexican primrose, here in Long Beach, CA.  The flowers are beautiful -
then die out about this time of year, leaving rhyzomes for next year.
I let them grow, but now that they're dying, I'm pulling out the dead
Blight - Grrrrrr04 Jul 2008 21:59 GMT8
This morning a neighbour reported blight on his spuds. The allotments are
only 50 metres from the house, so a quick look confirmed blight on 3 rows
each of my 1st and 2nd earlies. There are 3 rows of 'lates' but I guess
they'll follow soon.
Effective ways to turn grass weeds into compost04 Jul 2008 21:18 GMT3
I've got a bit of the kikuyu grass
http://www.weeds.org.au/cgi-bin/weedident.cgi?tpl=plant.tpl&ibra=all&card=E27
as well as other weeds in my lawn. The council planted it as the common
nature strip grass and some of it has gotten into my garden.
