Don't mention the war.......14 Jul 2008 19:46 GMT67
.......of the wasps.  We've just had a wasps nest destroyed and the man from
the council said "good job too".  Apparently what we had trying to nest in
the eaves of the tea room kitchen, were German wasps.  I don't think I've
ever heard of them but according to him they're smaller, ...
Cucumber pest?14 Jul 2008 18:56 GMT5
I've noticed in past years that when my cucumber vines get about 3 feet
long, SOMETHING happens to the growing tip. It gets kind of brown up one
side of the stem. The tip curls over and then dies.
Eventually the tip-less vine makes one or more side branch and the vine

Weed identifier14 Jul 2008 15:56 GMT4
I seem to recall a website with quality photos of the most common
weeds in the British Isles, but Google as I might, I don't seem to be
able to find it.  The nearest thing to crop up is a not very
satisfactory Bayer website.

Well, how do you decide?  Pull one and see how big it is, or what?

Fucshias Over Winter14 Jul 2008 15:07 GMT6
This year, I have some lovely fucshias in pots, which I would like to keep
over winter.  They are not hardy, so I would need to bring them inside.
This may be a stupid question, but if i do bring them in, do they still need
to be somewhere light, or could I just put them in the ...
String trimmer frustration14 Jul 2008 14:31 GMT6
Can anyone offer any suggestions for the purchase of a decent brand of
string trimmer where the line doesn't keep jamming?  Or a suggestion
to keep the line from jamming?  I have tried everything from throwing
away the half-full reel because I can't get it to release more line
Hydrangeas, weak stems14 Jul 2008 14:27 GMT1
Can anyone tell me how to strengthen the stems of hydrangeas? I have
new one, bought last year and it's growing beautifully but every tim
we get heavy rain the stalk bend, sometimes snap and they never recove
thereafter. I don't want to lose the blooms for next year.
Baffling Berberis seedling14 Jul 2008 13:07 GMT2
I have found one that looks very weird.  The petioles are up to
2-3 cm, and the leaves are very ovate (NOT obovate), and toothed.
I have B. vulgaris and B. thunbergii, but it doesn't match either,
unless the juvenile form of the former is very different from the

Pulling weeds versus hoeing?14 Jul 2008 04:12 GMT10
Which would take the least total work, pulling weeds or hoeing?  I
know that if you can pull a weed up roots and all it can not grow
back.  If you just cut it off an inch or two below the ground with a
hoe it can grow back but hoeing is much easier.

Zucchini flowers14 Jul 2008 02:18 GMT2
The flowers on my zucchini seem to drop off- or maybe they're being
bitten? It seems like a clean cut, as though someone took a pair of
scissors to them. I rarely see squirrels or other critters in the
yard. I had this issue once before, years and years ago, and I assumed
