Having had major failure with tomato seeds sent by my Canadian friend (first time it has happened), I had to crawl to a nursery and buy a "Celebrity" tomato plant. Not sure if I ever grew them before. But the main job last evening was transplanting the healthy, beautiful

During the past few days some bedding plants, which were still in shallow seed trays in the greenhouse, suddenly withered and died. On inspection of their roots I found a white maggot type creature in the compost. In another tray I found many chestnut brown cocoons/pupa

I have some red potatoes in the pantry with long sprouts on them, and unplanted space in the garden where the hail killed everything. (BTW, some of the tomatoes and peppers survived.)

I was a little turned off by the prices of fertilisers sold for gardens (at home depot), but I have a bag of 10-10-10 fertilizer for lawns, the sort that does not have any herbicides (ie, not a weed and feed type, just feed).

Never had a cat, so I've no idea what an average cat poo looks like, but I spose that the humongous jobbie in the garden this morning must have come from a large domestic cat. the neighbours either side are much too elderly to climb the garden

I have re-sown twice two rows of rocket and beetroot, once around mid March (I put down nothing happening to cold weather) and again in late April/early May. Not a dicky bird of either germinated. Now, I have sown rocket before and have never had this problem.

Just discovered that a previous source of spent mushroom compost has closed down. Used this stuff to improve soil before planting hedging and all the plants have survived and thrived.
