Plant ID request30 Jun 2008 21:02 GMT3
We've been away in Suffolk and saw this plant in someone's garden.  They
don't know what it is but have given us some, and I took two photos while we
were there.  Does anyone know what it is?  It was about 3ft or maybe a little
more tall, and as you may see smothered in bees:

Why are some plants labeled evil and other a gift from heaven?  I have
found that if poison ivy is about so is jewel weed.  Seems the cure is
readily available in the environment but we must have knowledge of it.
Our knowledge of nature seems to have been diminished a lot in the ...

Composting30 Jun 2008 16:36 GMT7
I'm fairly new to gardening and wondered how all of you keep roaches, ants
and rodents out of your compost heaps?  My compost bin is very
low-tech...just a large bucket.  Should I keep it sealed at all times?
Thanks for any and all comments,
Hornworms on my Datura30 Jun 2008 16:18 GMT1
Last evening, I made a quick run through my flowerbeds.  I have datura
that grows wild in one of my beds on the side of my house.  I noticed
that many of the plants' leaves were eaten, some with nothing left but
the stem.  Upon closer examination, I found the culprit, hornworms.  ...

What fertilizer for Indian Hawthorn for maximum growth?30 Jun 2008 13:52 GMT3
I just planted some 1.5 quart Indian Hawthorn plants. I'm in Florida -
very sandy soil. At the suggestion of the guy in the F&G dept at Home
Depot I put some topsoil in the holes for them. I see some new growth
but wondering what if anything I can do to maximize/accelerate their

whole area with weed preventing fabric and stone.
Potted bottle tree okay to trim?30 Jun 2008 13:16 GMT3
I'm in the UK and and about five years ago I bought a small Queenslan
bottle tree (Brachychiton rupestris) from a garden centre and it's bee
growing happily in a pot in my front room since then.
As it now stands about 2 metres tall it's reached the ceiling and ru
Growing cordylines30 Jun 2008 12:16 GMT3
When you buy Cordylines their tags states full sun does that mean they can
cope with our (West Aust) hot summers as well?
My understanding of these plants is that they are from New Zealand so they
wouldnt really be able to cope with our heat?

CONTAMINATED MANURE
A friend has a superb garden in Wendover which had a visit by my Garden
Club last week. In touring the garden we were asked if we knew what was
wrong with Sarah's tomatoes in her greenhouse.
Peach tree30 Jun 2008 06:25 GMT54
Our peach tree, suited for our area, has not produced healthy fruit in
three years.  This year I gave it one more chance.  I thinned the
fruits early, pruned properly, cleaned up the area beneath the tree,
fertilized it at the proper time and the fruit has the clear gunk on
