Growing tomatoes under lights29 Feb 2008 22:01 GMT4
I'm growing some tomato plants under a 400 watt metal halide lamp. They
are about three weeks old and several are a few days from blooming. Right
now I have them under 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness.
Should I continue to keep them under the MH lamp or should I switch ...
Deer eating my Hick's yew trees29 Feb 2008 21:35 GMT10
Hello, all: It's been an especially harsh winter here in Toronto and, for
the first time I've ever seen, some deer (2) have been coming up the ravine
into my backyard and have eating all the needles off my yew trees.  My
question is two-fold:

Water29 Feb 2008 20:08 GMT5
Severe drought, I'll say it aloud my friends.
Comments, especially the hill country people?
I'm hoping for some more isolated low cells to bring rain like last year.
I give the TV weather people the finger everyday now for their pretty
opinion on Helleborus29 Feb 2008 19:14 GMT1
I live in Seattle, zone 8ish (maybe different as I'm in the foothills of the
mountains) and talking to a nursery owner about some perennials for a
filtered sun area he recommended potentially some helleborus plants.
I'm not at all familiar with this plant, he indicated that the ...
Tree sap question29 Feb 2008 16:37 GMT29
Just curious. As I understand it the evaporation of moisture is what
draws the sap from the toots up the tree. Does this mean that the sap
does not rise until the leaves unfurl? If so where do the leaves obtain
the energy to be "kick started"?
Home made cloches for raised beds.29 Feb 2008 15:33 GMT4
Looking to make improvised cloches using fleece or mesh for carrots and
brassicas. I have found steel rods for 83p per m for 12mm and found 15mm
plastic pipe at builders merchant (may be a bit slack). Has anyone done it
this way, perhaps with alkathene?  I was thinking of 36 inch ...
Briggs and Stratton boycott!29 Feb 2008 13:37 GMT10
Their products aren't that good, and they like to cripple americans.
How can we support that?
Why ANTS on my Dendrobiums and Epidendrums, only?29 Feb 2008 11:36 GMT11
I've never had the problem in the past. At first I thought that the soap
spray I recently started using attracted them, but why not all my other
orchids?
All my plants are under 20/20 screening; southen exposure... and I'm in
When is it suitable to start planting crops?29 Feb 2008 08:39 GMT3

The maximum temperature in my area is only around 14c during the day

Strawberry orientation29 Feb 2008 01:04 GMT1
I'm going to put in some strawberries.  Is there any advantage to the
orientation?  I can plant it in several locations, shielded in each
directions.  Would this make a difference, say in winter, when they would be
sheltered from the north wind.  Or in the summer when they would be

Living in Austin Tx and the stickers will be here soon.
Question: Is there anything I can apply to my lawn to rid it of these
nasty sandburs ?   Half of my yard is burrs, and the other is St. Augustine.
Thanks for any replies.
Gardening Safety28 Feb 2008 19:55 GMT3
When you learn the art of gardening, there are few safety consideration
that you need to address. No matter what type of gardening project yo
are undertaking, be it a bloom of flowers, a bounty of vegetables or a
entire backyard landscape, you will encounter many common safet
