Do you compost30 Nov 2007 22:58 GMT35
We recently moved out in the country.  Nothing to do but we had to make a
compost pile.  I admit, it's a handy place for garbage we would usually put
in the can for a week.  Yech!
Does it work?  How much work is it?  How often are you supposed to turn it?
Shrub Disease30 Nov 2007 22:39 GMT1
I planted 4 shrubs (euonymus [albo-marginata], green inner leaf and pale
yellow on the outside) a couple years ago and they were doing fine.
They are now about 2.5 feet high by about 2 feet wide.
In the last few months 3 of them were severely losing leaves and I noticed
lettuce ?30 Nov 2007 21:16 GMT7
A garden in the village has what look like several very large lettuce
growing in their flower border`s, we have had a couple of hard frosts and I
would have thought that if it was lettuce they would have gone long ago,
what else can the plants be.
liverwort30 Nov 2007 19:09 GMT3
Does anyone know of a good way to get rid of liverwort on open ground?
I've tried Roundup and vineagar (separately) without much effect. The
liverwort is taking over areas which used to be covered with a nice moss.
Thanks,
chilli pepper house plant "Apache" advice30 Nov 2007 18:55 GMT7
I bought a small potted houseplant Chilli pepper ("Apache") back in
October and have had some excellent chillies from it.
My experience of house plants so far is limited to the hardy Spider
plant, and I'm having a few problems:

exochorda massacre30 Nov 2007 12:52 GMT10
The guy cutting hedges (for the village) went a little too far towards our gate.  There
was a nice established Exochorda "the Bride", about 5 years in the ground, that was
chopped to bits.  There are a couple of feet of bare wood left, that's all.
Anyone know how these respond to ...
Pumpkin Seeds...I have no idea! Help!30 Nov 2007 08:07 GMT6
Ok, so we carved a (Supermarket) pumpkin at Haloween, then had a
bright idea of saving some seeds ready to plant next year. I kept back
a good handful of seeds, and put them into a plastic food bag (Only
thing handy at the time).
Denver area daffodil bulbs30 Nov 2007 08:07 GMT5
We bought a big bag of like 75 daffodil bulbs from Costco a couple of
weeks ago.
I SHOULD have planted them then, but haven't had the time.
Is there a way I can store them and plant them next spring, so they won't

Are Canna bulbs safe from Squirrels30 Nov 2007 00:35 GMT3
I'm planning to grow a bed of Canna next year. However there are lot
of squirrels and skunks around my house. Is this a bad idea ? I can
try to plant the bulbs deeper and mixed with chilly powder/blood meal.
But does squirrels also damage the foliage and flowers ?
moles29 Nov 2007 22:57 GMT48
[note x-post to uk.d-i-y & uk.rec.gardening]
I have a mole at the top of my garden. The first hill appeared about 10
days ago and the second, nearby, a couple of days ago. Both in lawn.
What should I do? Our garden is intended to encourage wildlife but hills

bird feeders29 Nov 2007 21:50 GMT9
I've always wanted a bird feeder in the back yard, so
I can watch pretty little birds feeding and singing. I
put up a large bird feeder with sunflower seed type
feed.  And I waited, and waited some more......until they
