Wilting Aralia Aureomarginata23 Jun 2005 21:42 GMT2
The above tree is wilting and turning brown. I have recently bought
this small tree from a garden centre and have planted it in a spot that
receives full sun all afternoon and shade during the morning. It has
been planted in John Innes N03 with a mixture of bone meal. I am
Hosepipe ban23 Jun 2005 21:31 GMT39
I heard that North Sussex had imposed a hosepipe ban this week. Any
other areas similarly restricted? Can there really be a drought? Or are
the water companies just inefficient?
vertical gardening & tomato cages 23 Jun 2005 20:17 GMT9
Those tiny little plants are growing every day and maybe I didn't
plant them far enough apart.  I wonder which plants, other than
tomatoes, would benefit from the tomato conical cages?  Going or
growing up would three demensionally give me more space. What about

Name that bug ?23 Jun 2005 18:24 GMT3
Following the recent success of identifying my caterpillar and
although not strictly gardening, I thought someone might like a go at
' Name that bug ' for a mystified friend.
Seen SW France, early June. 4 cm wing span. 3 cms long.
discoloured rose leaves23 Jun 2005 15:30 GMT6
Apologies if this is a duplicated post but it didn't seem to appear the
first time!
My "city of London" roses are developing yellow leaves which are
dropping off. I have sprayed regularly with systhane and the leaves do

Tits - Less Activity Noticed23 Jun 2005 13:57 GMT7
This should probably be on some ornithological group but hey ho.
I have noticed that a pair of tits (not sure of variety other than
feathered!) were nest building, pecking out hole etc of my nesting box.
This interest went on for weeks, so I think they were pretty committed to
Hanging plant suggestions23 Jun 2005 13:37 GMT4
Does anyone have a suggestion for a plant which does the following:
Needs to hang over a small wall (1ft high) - some sort of ground
creeper I guess?
Needs to survive the winter, I think the term is Perennial
Purple and black plants, book recommendation23 Jun 2005 13:29 GMT6
Does anyone else share my addiction for purple flowers and
purple/black foliage? If so, you might enjoy a book I've just acquired.
It's called Black Magic and Purple Passion ISBN 09545764-2-X, author
Karen Platt.
Squash decapitation23 Jun 2005 13:01 GMT4
It's my first attempt at growing butternut squashes.  I've been growing them
in the house from seed (from a fruit) and planted them outside a few weeks
ago.  They're flowering, but what seems to happen is the flower opens for a
few days then shrivels up and drops off, leaving just ...
bees in the chimney23 Jun 2005 12:16 GMT34
We're installing a wood stove this summer, which means we want to line
the chimney first.
But I notice we have a bees nest in the chimney. Is putting a liner in
likely to disturb them?

them what to do right now in their yard....Most are so intimidated by the
Please could people quote context?23 Jun 2005 12:06 GMT51
An increasing number of people are posting replies to threads without
any indication of what it is that they're replying to, other than the
heading which may or may not be informative.
Like many (most?) people, I'm reading this newsgroup using software that
