how to calculate the  reaction on ridge beam31 Aug 2005 17:50 GMT5
Is there a formula to calculate the load (pound/ft) carried by the roof
ridge beam that is supporting tributary rafters without collar ties (the
rafters are supported on the walls).
Thanks

Help with building code 30 Aug 2005 13:25 GMT3
Hi there.  I live in western NY and have a temporary garage shelter.  I've
had it since fall of last year and it has been a big help with not having to
brush the snow off before traveling to work in the winter, and to keep the
direct sun off the car.  Last week I received a ...
I-beam installed upside down30 Aug 2005 06:41 GMT22
Hi everyone.  A year after living in our newly constructed ranch house
we noticed that the floors were separating from the floor molding in
one area of our house.
It turns out that one of the posts holding one the the I-beams was
Re-sealing asphalt shingles -- OK?29 Aug 2005 07:55 GMT8
I live in Florida and I have a 10 year old roof that sustained some
hurricane damage in the September 2004 storms.  Roughly 1/4 of the
shingles on the roof have lost their seals -- IE you can stick your
finger underneath them and lift them up off the roof.  The past several

Removal of ceiling joists in garage truss27 Aug 2005 16:37 GMT10
I have a friend who is trying to gain additional head clearance in his
garage.  The garage is 20' x 38'.  The roof pitch is approximately a
7/12.  Roof is constructed of 2x4 rafters 2' on center with a 1x6 ridge
beam.  Every other rafter (every 4') has a joist running from exterior

Hello,
Drywall Question26 Aug 2005 20:28 GMT8
I've been working on finishing my basement and have just primed all
the walls to keep the dust down and make the room usable.  Upon closer
inspection I have found there are a couple of areas that could have used a
bit of additional care during the mudding phase.  What is ...
Timber Deck on Concrete Pool26 Aug 2005 18:10 GMT3
I have an inground concrete pool and I want to build a timber deck
around it. The deck will only be about 250mm from the ground to match
the height of the top of pool. My question is, is it safe to attach a
ledger board to the pool shell? The pool shell is 300mm thick
Bearing / Non-Bearing wall fit26 Aug 2005 14:32 GMT10
We are building a large new house.  The roof is constructed of large
beams (there are a number of ridges, most beams are 5"x20" LVL) and
engineered rafters.  At one point (of a large span) where a number of
beams meet there is a post that extends all the way down (24') to a
Balance between Man and nature? Who are we kidding?26 Aug 2005 14:13 GMT13
The average "conserv"ative has great respect for nature, as long as
they can mine, drill, hunt, fish, drive, snowmobile or jet-ski in it.
The agenda has always been clear: nature has minimal value unless
people can take something from it, and that doesn't mean photographs.
Sheathing cutouts26 Aug 2005 14:00 GMT12
Concerning openings for doors and windows, is it better to:
A - measure & cut sheathing openings before installing, or
B - install sheathing and cut it in place?  (I assume with
jigsaw or circular saw set to sheathing thickness)
yellowjackets26 Aug 2005 13:27 GMT15
I have yellow jackets in the ceiling joist cavity.  We recently added a
second floor and it took the builder months to finish the trim outside.  The
bees must have found a home in the time being.
Initially, not knowing the full extent, I mearly cauled the holes where they
