Replace windows or not31 Jan 2005 20:53 GMT1
My main problem with existing windows are that they are
ugly. I am wondering if I will gain enough energy efficiency
to make it worth spending money on new windows.  The windows
are in a north facing wall insulated with R-11 fiberglass.
horizontal standoff for 3/4" copper pipe?31 Jan 2005 17:38 GMT7
I'm looking for some mounting hardware for 3/4" copper pipe that will keep
it a couple inches from the wood. I want to do it this way so that the
pipe can be completely insulated and not touch the wood. The pipe will run
horizontally and attach to a joist. What are the brand & ...
MDF/Medium Density Fibreboard31 Jan 2005 05:45 GMT2
Hey all,
I am thinking of installing MDF wainscoting in my basement and was shocked
to read that it has urea formaldehyde in it.  So, when cut or sanded it is
apparently dangerous.
Ceiling Wiring: Drill or Staple?31 Jan 2005 05:19 GMT5
Existing finished basement, I need to pull some more wires. Since I have an
installed drop ceiling does NEC allow me to simply attach the newly pulled
wires to the bottom of the joists or must I again (as I did when
constructing) drill x # of inches from the joist edge?
Milgard windows that not the right size30 Jan 2005 18:40 GMT15
Is there a market out there for brand new milgard windows that got ordered
but were not the right size.
They are Vinyl dual pane Lo E - no grids- double hung-nail on new

Frozen pipes?30 Jan 2005 13:11 GMT6
I was trying to thaw out the pipes in a house we rent on the beach in
Scituate, MA.
I have isolated the problem to the water main coming in from the street.
This has not happened to this house since I installed the water line 25
Thermal mass for multi-story house.30 Jan 2005 07:57 GMT9
This may sound like a trivial neophyte question, but how do people
incorporate enough thermal mass into a "traditional" multi-story home?
Where I  live, Southern Califonia, near the ocean, the weather is very
mild and pleasant.  Except for a few chilly winter nights there are no
Truss Question - bottom chord30 Jan 2005 07:07 GMT20

way to cut the bottom chord and reinforce the adjacent ...

My wife and I are building a timber frame home, the beams are rough cut

French Drain - Proper Procedures29 Jan 2005 15:29 GMT7
I am currently (today and tomorrow) having a french drain installed in

I have read alot about this and the contractor does not seem to be
Materials for stove hood fan / vent29 Jan 2005 15:13 GMT4
I am building a suite in my basement and want to install a standard
stove hood fan that is vented out an exterior wall of my house. It would
be easier for me if I could use the flexible aluminum venting pipe that
is sold for venting clothes dryers. The distance from the vent to ...

Home Inspection results28 Jan 2005 06:15 GMT3
I have been in the construction business for 35 years but my home
inspector saved me quite a bit of money by finding things that I never
would have found.  Several plumbing/heating upgrades were needed and
four GFCI receptacles were not working properly and they will be fixed.
Online source for 1/2" polyiso foam insulation? 28 Jan 2005 03:48 GMT1
Although I prefer the Dow Tuff-R brand, I might consider a different brand as
long as it is similar with the foil on both sides.  I'm looking for a source
where I can place an order online and have a bunch sent to me UPS or truck.
I'm looking to purchase about 80 pieces (maybe a ...
