what takeover of the food supply? the article discusses the
fact that 3 inspectors let through some floral & produce
without fumigation. while this poses a danger for growers
within the US, it's nothing that directly affects consumers.
the line about:
> "People across the country ate those plant products infested
with plant pests because of the crimes the defendants
committed," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Sam Sheldon,
according to press accounts.

is simple fearmongering. people eat buggy produce all the
time. produce gets bugs on/in it. all produce, no matter where
it comes from or how you buy it (fresh, frozen, or canned),
should be at least looked over for bugs or bad spots.
so, what's your point posting this?

Obviously you're not farming for your community so you needn't be concerned.

It appears the sub-text is "Don't buy produce from Mexico."

It does look like, in September, COOL (County of Origin Labeling) will
finally go into effect. The requirement for labeling on "beef, pork, lamb,
fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood and peanuts." was included in the
2002 Farm Bill, to take effect in 2004. But except for fish, it had been
stalled since.  So, consumers will soon be able to decide for themselves
whether/not they want to buy produce (etc) from any particular country(s).

And the wonderful, paid lobbyists known as the USDA, fought this every inch
of the way. Although, in some sensitive areas they would have some of their
underlings go on record supporting it for the sake of the "family farmer"
which they wish would just die off rather quickly.

Well, of course Venaman opposed it, but it was certain Congressmen who
stalled it. It was certain segments of the beef industry (meat packers)
who fought the hardest and most vocally against it.

I think JC is an Ayn Rand Free Market True Believer.  He apparently
believes that God wants Mexican bugs to eat Texan grapefruit, resulting
in a level playing field all the way from Panama to Dallas.

He has an uphill battle.  Free Markets are in bad repute lately, since
they fouled up the economy, then wailed for socialist bailouts.  It
looks like the taxpayer will pay a $ trillion, after getting shafted by
a market that was supposed to be "free".

So much for deregulation.  There is no morality in profit.

Professor, you need to get back to some remedial reading class. My bitch is
that the friggin USDA did NOT do their job and that they are trying their
best to put us family farmers out of business so the big boys can get back
the 18% of their market we have taken from them because we don't use
poisons, chemicals and other radiation on the products we sell to our
customers. Got that?

well, that's certainly NOT how your original post came
across.
