I noticed that there are hardly any messages posted here these days.

If I am not mistaken, this group used to be fairly active.  Or, is it
possible that I am confusing this with another group by a different name
that I used to check out from time to time?

Maybe it's because Verizon.net got rid of all "alt." newsgroups.  Or,
because Comcast.net got rid of ALL of their newsgroups.

I now use free newsgroup providers like:

news://news.motzarello.org  (go to motzarella.newusers for info on how to
see all of their newsgroups)

and,

news://nntp.aioe.org

Oops, that should be:

news://news.motzarella.org  (not motzarell-"O")

You are correct. A couple of the ISP's have dropped newsgroup service.
That's why you don't see their customers in here anymore. Now AT&T has
decided to become a half-assed ISP and is dropping newsgroups on July 15th.
When that happens I'll drop AT&T and give my money to an ISP that provides
newsgroup access.

You mentioned that Verizon dropped alt newsgroups. That's why I ceased using
them as my cellphone provider and went to Cricket (at mycricket.com). When
an ISP decides to provide half-assed service, I take my money elsewhere.
