Fireplace Plug?

Hello,

Has anyone in the group had any experience with the following item?

http://www.fireplaceplug.com/brick.htm

This is to be used to seal off an unused fireplace that is missing its
original damper, due to the installation of a coal burning stove in the
past. The stove has since been removed and now the home owner wants to seal
off the opening. Currently, it is only sealed off with some plastic, which
doesn't really afford any energy savings. Attempts were made to find an old
original style damper without any success. Even if one were to be found, it
wouldn't offer much with regard to insulating the area.

Does anyone have any comments on the above item? Any other ideas or
recommendations to accomplish the task would also be welcome.

Thanks in advance to those who post a reply here.

I've stuffed a piece of unfaced fiberglass batt up there to do the job.

Here is some feedback on our plug:

"You have an excellent product there. When I first pulled the
DraftStoppers out of the bag I was shocked at the size and thought, "this
will never work". However, it just so happened that installation day was
incredibly windy and I was able to smoke the fireplaces for the customer
before and after installation and your plug stopped any and all air loss.
It's a fantastic day when I can provide a product to my customers that is
simple, straight-forward, and remarkably effective. Count on more orders
from my company!"

"Hi, Just wanted to let you know that I received my draft stopper for my
fireplace yesterday and installed it with no problems.  What a great
product!  I noticed a difference right away and it was so easy to install.
I've can't believe I waited years to solve this problem!  Thanks!"
--Barbara C.

"Wow! The Fireplace Plug inflated quickly and easily. We installed it in
our chimney and its doing a great job keeping the cold air out. Thanks for
making sure I was a satisfied customer. I will definitely recommend Battic
Door to my friends. Thanks!"
--Roger M.

"The fireplace stopper is brilliant. I've already told my brother who is a
part-time mason. He's thrilled! Thanks for your help."
--Annamarie P.

"Thank you so much.  I will recommend your company anytime.  You guys are
fantastic.  If you ever need a good word just let me know."
--Kathy M.

"Hello, just wanted to let you know that we received the Fireplace Draft
Stopper. We installed it immediately. We can't believe how well it
works!!!! We don't have anymore smell in our house. Thank you so much for
solving our problem. We have been telling everyone about your products."
--Michael  E.,

"Thank You for your quick reply. With the high price of natural gas this
winter your Fireplace Draftstopper was a god send. Thanks again and I have
recommended your product to many of my friends and acquaintances.”
--Bob K.

“I received both my Fireplace Draftstopper and Battic Door attic stair
cover. Easy to install and Fireplace Draftstopper is really great !!!! My
neighbor and I were both impressed. Also, I gave information to one of the
board members of our development to look at.”

The trick with using the fiberglass plug in the fireplace is it does
nothing for air sealing, and you will have air currents comming down the
Chimney that you need to stop. Fiberglass is a great insulator, but if you
have air movement it essentially looses its ability to hold back cold.

I would recommend the clear fireplace plug called a chimney balloon to
plug the fireplace flue. You can get a chimney balloon in the size that
you need for this application.

The black fireplace plug you refer to here only comes in 2 sizes and is
suppose to press against an existing damper door and since you dont have a
damper it wont work.
