Sorry if my description wasn't clear. Here's some ASCII art (use a
fixed width font):
C common joist (existing)
T double trimmer joist (new)
H double header joist (new)
t tail joist (existing)
C TT t t t TT C
C TT t t t TT C
C TT t t t TT C
C TT t t t TT C
C TT t t t TT C
C TT t t t TT C
C TTHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHTT C
C TTHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHTT C
C TT TT C
C TT TT C
C TT TT C
The problem is that there is only 7/8" between the lefthand tail joist
and the lefthand (double) trimmer joist. So I can't use a joist
hanger to connect that tail joist to the header joist, it would
overlap with the joist hanger connecting the header joist to the
trimmer joist.
So is there anything wrong with using some 7/8" thick boards (old
salvaged 1x) to fill the gap between the tail joist and the trimmer
joist, and then face nailing the tail joist to the trimmer joist? As
another poster mentioned, that tail joist basically then becomes a
nailer hanging off the trimmer joist.
Thanks, Wayne

I don't see any problem with that arrangement. I'd use construction
adhesive and Timberlock screws instead of the 20d nails.

You can get them cheaper, so shop around. A big box store near you
probably has them. They're commonly used in fastening landscape ties.
