I think I need something verified. Our master bath shower is leaking.
Obviously a bad pan install. The water leaks out under the marble sill.
They cut open the 1st floor ceiling to have a look at the drain to see
if it was leaking around it and the vinyl liner. It's bone dry. I am
inclined to think that the water is getting between the liner and the
mud base and wicking its way towards the marble sill and up. Another
possibility is the a coller or sleave extension where the drain
attaches has a crack. Reguardless of all this I would think that water
that got on top of the liner would still move down towards the drain. I
did some research and saw that it's typical to pre-slope the floor (on
top of the plywood subfloor) with a mud base then put down the liner,
then make the real mud base for the tile. Most site I've been to say
it's done incase water get in between the liner and mud base.
Well from what I can tell my shower has no pre-slope mudbase. If you
look at the photo, the liner (grey)looks to be resting on the subfloor.
I also remember the plumber putting down the liner on the subfloor. The
mud base and tile was NOT done by the plumber but by the tile guy. I
would think the tile guy would have noticied this. Is NOT haveing a
pre-slope still an acceptable way of do a shower ?????

If the water's leaking out from under the marble door sill, why would
you assume it has anything at all to do with the drain, or for that
matter, the lack of sloped pan? A sloped pan is important, but it's
doubtful that the water is backing up several inches in height behind
the tile and coming out at the sill. I'd look first to the sill
installation itself and the door jambs.
There are things I don't like about the installation, but check closest
to the leak first.

Thanks for the reply.
I ment to say that the marble sill is actually the shower entry sill
(see pic)

Since I can't see anything underneath, I'm assuming it's between the
liner and the mud base. I even blocked off the entire entry way from
water and ran the shower. After about 10 min. it starts to seep out
under the moulding. I since taken off the trim and see it does come
from under the 2 two by four sill. Since no water is present in the
entryway where it leaking it must be comming from the drain. I'm
thinking it goin through the crome strainer then somehow (maybe through
a crack flange of pipe) leaking out to the out side of the pipe to the
mud base. Then finally hitting the liner. Since I don't remember them
putting in a pre-slope, the water is free to go any which way. How does
this sound ? Also is a pre-slope required ?? Thanks

If your floor has just a slight slope towards the sill, then this is
what you get. I'm sorry to tell you now that it's done, but both the
plumber and tiler screwed up. They should've worked together before
starting the install, or the tiler should've subcontracted a carpenter
to put in a proper plywood subfloor and then the plumber for the drain.
From what I can see, there are several things wrong, which may cause
the whole floor to fail in the near future. It only goes to show that
you need references for your contractors and several quotes, and they
need to be able to tell you exactly what they're going to do and why.
