I've searched and found some older messages about lumber liquidators,
but I'd like a new update. I've read some pretty bad stuff about how
quality has gone down the tube over recent years and people have had
all kinds of issues getting the warranty backed when the finish has
bubbled. I don't know if these are isolated cases of user-error or
installer-error. Does anyone have any opinions on the company? Good or
bad experiences? Any tips for dealing with the company? Given what I've
read, I will definitely inspect each floor piece before its laid.

My husband and I are looking at putting one of the exotic species of
wood floors throughout our new house, so any other supplier is just too
expensive for 1600 ft of wood floor.

Saw a job a couple of weeks ago - 3/8" flooring - stuff was terrible -
random widths - tongue missing - bad finish.  It was from LL.  Have
also heard horror stories about stuff milled in China.  Go to that home
website - www.gardenweb.com and go to the flooring section - a ton of
cookies on this site but good info.  There are a lot of different
sources of flooring reviewed.

I bought a couple of thousand s.f  of unfinished 3/4 " white oak from them
with no problem, at half the price that is was elsewhere.

what grade was it? I can get some for about 2.50 locally. but am
looking for qrtr.sawn.
I know a guy who bought some maple from L.L.  and is pleased with it.
I think finishing can make or break the floor in some cases.

Last year, we bought about 500 sq/ft of Australian Cypress from the local
Lumber Liquidators warehouse. We only needed about 400 sq/ft, but ordered a
little extra just in case.

The company itself was pleasant to deal with, and had the materials in
stock. It took two trips, but we carted the wood home ourselves in my small
utility trailer.

The Australian Cypress seems to be really prone to splitting anyway, but we
did receive a fair percentage with broken tongues, damaged grooves, etc. In
addition, the Australian Cypress has some really wide color variations,
which meant many perfectly usable boards were just too ugly to lay down in
our floor. :) However, we planned ahead and ordered extra to accomodate the
waste and had no problems. Even with the extra, we came out ahead on price.
We installed many of the "ugly" boards under the areas where our kitchen
cabinets would go, leaving the pretty boards for the visible areas.

Overall, I'd say it was a pleasant experience. Just remember to blend in
the shorter boards as you lay down the floor. We didn't do that enough, and
ended up with lots of little boards at the end. It worked out fine in our
case since the final area was in a hallway, but it could be a problem if
you weren't careful...

Take care,

Anthony

LI has a small place here in Austin, no address listed, just a phone #.
Called multiple times, most times no answer, got a recording sometimes, left
message. No response.  I'd take my money elsewhere.

We did the floors in three rooms already and have the material for two
more plus a hallway.  The only problem we had was the milling on some
of the Brazillian Cherry.  It "could" have been dealt with by the
installer for about an hour's extra work for an entire room; but it
wasn't.  However, other than that, the flooring looks terrific!

We installed Bolivian Rosewood in one room, with enough for the other
rooms and hall, previously mentioned; out master bedroom in Bloodwood
and anothe bedroom in the Brazillian Cherry.  The price we paid was at
least 1/2 of anywhere else, or less!

The name alone "Liquidators" implies they are selling stock that could not
be sold at full price by first line retailers.  I would expect a certain
level of defects but poor customer service should not be part of the deal.
Careful marketing has convinced us that liquidation only means discount but
that is not the case.
