I am planning on installing a new shower on the second floor of our house.
It will have tiled walls and floors but I don't know how to prepare the
shower basin. Do I put a type of rubber down then a cement leveler before
applying the tiles?
Any help or websites would be appreciated.
Thanks

For free step by step instrucitons including pictures, go to your local
library and check out books on how to tile. My little local library
had several complete with pics on how to install all the various
layers. Pics help a lot. The rubber membrane goes below IIRC, but
check out the how to books - your local big box store will sell you
some but the library is free. ALso suggest you use latex modified
thinset - a whole lot stronger than straight thinset.

You have two ways to go: The easier way is to get a fiberglass pan liner of
the correct size and install on a bed or mortar then tile to its edge. The
other way is to make the pan yourself and it consists of layers of mortar,
PVC pan liner and wire mesh. Get a book or see the label on the Otley PVC
pan liner for a diagram (yes, available at HD, custom cut or precut
package.)

Jeff,
You might check out the Fine Homebuilding web site. One reference there is:
http://www.taunton.com/finehomebuilding/pages/h00125.asp which you download for
a fee.
Also check the Taunton Press site. IIRC, they also have a book on the tile and
concrete.

Look at this .pdf:

very complete with illustrations.
