Timber Deck on Concrete Pool

I have an inground concrete pool and I want to build a timber deck
around it. The deck will only be about 250mm from the ground to match
the height of the top of pool. My question is, is it safe to attach a
ledger board to the pool shell? The pool shell is 300mm thick
reinforced concrete, and I would drill in 50mm and insert an expanding
masonary bolt to hold the board. My pool builder has said he thinks it
will be fine and will not affect the integrity of the pool.

Has anyone else done this? Do you think this is a bad idea?

cheers

that's fine. just keep holes far enough below concrete edge to avoid
cracking pieces off the top.
BTW, grade your soil to allow deck joist to remain clear of the ground and
it's moisture.

This project is totally doable  but I would suggest:

1) the use of a chemical anchor (epoxy, vinyl ester; Hilti, Sika)
rather than an expansion anchor.

The expnasion anchors are quick & easy BUT they are more likely to
split the concrete esp if you're close on edge distance.

2)  make sure you have sufficent clearance to the dirt & don't  trap
moisture under the deck (rot / termites)

3) no soil / timber contact

The only problem I see is if you drill too close to the top of the concrete,
you might break out a piece of the pool wall when you tighten the expanding
masonary bolt.
I would think a 6" to 8" expanding masonary bolt would be about the right
length.
If you have to drill close to the top (within 2") you might want to use
threaded rod and an epoxy.
