I have a backyard that I would like to pave with these 18"x18"x about 2"
slabs and would like to know the
best base.
I'm thinking of 3/8" gravel to level the yard off - about 1" - 4" thickness.
This would be tamped down and a 1" layer of sand placed over it. Finally the
pavers would be placed on the sand and gently tamped into place.
Is this realistic, or am I missing something?
TIA

Haven't done this kind of job...But over here, pea gravel costs more
than sand, so there'd be no advantage to using gravel as a base. And
your sand-on-top would trickle-down through your gravel.

Sweep sand over this to fill in the gaps once they are laid. Otherwise
sounds good!

Around here we'd use what they call 3/4" minus road base. Crushed rock,
3/4" and smaller with about 25% sand already mixed in.
Laid and flattened with a rented plate compactor. I have the stuff laid in
my yard for just under 1200 sf of concrete being poured Tuesday. It would
work for your slabs too.

Thanks Nehmo, Noozer and Rudy.
Just the kind of answers I had hoped for. Rudy hit the nail on the head :-)
Thanks again and enjoy the week.
