Hi Folks,
I can't find this in the local code. Is there a recommended minimum
distance between
the bottom of a second story window, and the top roof line of a porch
being added
below? Is 6-8" sufficient? Thanks,

I know of no code required minimum distance between a roof and the
bottom of window. Just make sure you have enough room to properly
flash the wall to roof intersection and trim the exterior or the
window.
Do not go too high or you could have an egress problem. There are
code maximums for the distance between the finish floor and the
bottom of the window opening for some window locations.

There is no code mandated separation of window sill and porch roof.
Leave enough to flash roof to wall and below window sill.
Less than about 8 inches may produce rot in sill from extra splash off
roof.

I think the only limitation is the strength of the header over
the window being suficient. roof over a 4' window would be
adequately supported by double 2 x 6's in most cases near the
roof line or possibly less. if its a large bay window you
might need double 2 x 10's or larger.
