I'm installing 4 skylights in a porch. Velux fixed models.
I may need to put on a metal roof, or have a roofer do it.
The flashing kit for metal roofs costs more than the skylight
itself. I am wondering if it is really necessary to buy the
manufacturer's kit, or is it possible to do the flashing oneself
or have a roofer do it using standard flashing materials.
Thanks,

Buy the manufacturer's flashing and have the assembly installed by one of
their authorized installers unless you are yet another fool trying to save
peanuts who will only realize how stoopit you really are when your skylight
leaks water into your corn flakes.

Velux makes some high quality stuff. I've never had a Velux leak - but
then again, I always use their flashing kits and have never used one on
a metal roof.
This from Yankee Barn Homes:
" Yankee Barn supplies Velux brand skylights. We normally supply Velux
flashing kits (for metal roofs, roofers may prefer to fabricate their
own flashing kits)." Makes sense. The flashing kits are meant to save
carpenters time and trouble. Roofers used to working with metal
roofing will have no problems fabricating their own. It's just a
question of price then.
