What is a "skid"?

Slightly OT but..

I know what a "pallet load" is but what is a "skid" (in the context of
shipping materials/objects around). Seen on a Fedex shipping website.

skid = pallet
Its the wooden/plastic thing that your shipment sits on that can be lifted
by a fork lift.

From my experience, a "skid" is the pallet, but more generally includes
anything on it as well.

In my business we also call modular packaged equipment that
can be moved easily..say a modular pumping unit etc..we call
that a 'skid package'... liftable with a forklift though the
steel I beam frame rails.

Apparently you missed the sarcasm. But, they are called skids, too.
