I would like to take out a wall (about 6') between dining room and kitchen
in a log cabin. Wall is part of gable end of cabin........kitchen was an add
on. How would i put a header in to support weight? Would i make header using
a log? Ive put headers in openings in load bearing walls in a regular house
but have never dealt with log cabins. Anyone done this before or can point
me in right direction? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Can't you simply cut the wall back and leave the logs flush with the gable
end wall or with 6"-12". Might have a nice esthetic effect! If necessesary
you could do that with a post as well.

I'm assuming that the gable end is made from solid logs given your
description, but can you confirm that?  If it is, then you'll likely not
need a header as a solid log wall is itself a very stout structure and
will transfer most loads around a door opening unless the span is very
long (>8' or so).
