How do you vacuum an oriental rug?

I was told one should turn it upside down and vacuum, then turn it
right side up and vacuum again.  Seems strange.  What say you?

I just use the vacuum cleaner on it like any other rug.  Maybe the advice
you got was for a once a year cleaning.  Few people could mover all the
furniture and turn a room-size rug over every few days.

She's a Titan.  She can move the furniture and vacuum at the same
time.

Not really.  I'm trying to guess what her next question would be.
Maybe let's limit the discussion to throw carpets, hall runners, etc.
that don't have furniture on them.  Is there a difference between
oriental rugs and other rubs, and if one vacuums from both sides,
should the bottom side be first.

BTW, she adds that she was vacuuming when her boyfriend was there, and
he listened and said something was wrong.  Sure enough, the belt on
the upright was missing and the brush wasn't brushing.  So he put one
on, and the carpet didn't look any different with a working vacuum
cleaner than with one that only sucked but didn't brush.   I think she
still vacuums as often, but now she wonders why.
