Hi - Knocked over a glass of Guinness on my new carpet last night which
doesn't seem to fade no matter how much I scrub.

Any ideas?

I would rent an extraction carpet cleaning machine.  Make sure to get the
upholstery attachment and use it on the spot.  I would use plain water in
the machine.  Many carpets are colorfast even with the use of Clorox.  If
the extraction machine (like the Rug Doctor) doesn't fully eliminate the
stain, test an inconspicuous spot, like in a closet, with a solution of
chlorine bleach.  If it doesn't change the color, that will probably work to
remove the stain.  If that makes you nervous, you can try a spot remover for
carpet like Resolve.

Where's FH when we need him?  Clorox is likely to damage the fiber.

The water from the Guinness and the scrubbing may be wicking dirt to the
surface.  In that case, the solution might be to turn on a fan and give
it enough hours or days to dry completely, then clean the surface with a
damp cloth.

LOL  i'm here (just late )   :-)

not sure what Yamit put on the carpet to get it out, but i would never use
bleach!!!

it sounds like you may have put a soapy cleaner on top of the carpet?  that
in itself will attract dirt etc.

how much spilled?  if it was a lot, then get the carpet wet with water (down
to the padding) and then put a thick bath towel over it with, stand on it
until the liquid goes into the towel. repeat the process until you get very
little... then use a heavy heavy weight of some kind, put a towel on it
again and put the weight on top of it over night...this will force the spill
( and soap) up into the towel. once you do this (change the towel out a few
times until you no longer get any wicking), then use just water and a towel
to rinse the spot out of the carpet. do not soak it, just lightly spray it
and towel it up. if you have a fan, put the fan by it so it will dry out
fast.

i could give  better advice if i had more details.

I use ACT stain brake'r one step.
I got it from my carpet store but is available by 800-741-3472 (advanced
chemical technologies, inc., newnan, GA).
It is really great on non-petroleum stains.  It says on the label pet
stains, grease, chocolate, cola, iodine, fuit juices, alchohol, blood, cold
coffee, tea, makeup, shoe polish and much more.
