petem - 28 Feb 2004 00:00 GMT Hi i posted in the alt security alarm newsgroup about what would be the best alarm system to integrate in a homeautomation project, and got no real answer and lot of flame so i ask here...
i want to do the following..(not limited to..)
in a split level house 36*32 with 3 bedroom,1 kitchen/dinning room 1 living room at the same level of the kitchen,1 large family room(will turn it in a home theater) in the basement, 2 bath room,(one between 2 bed room on top of garage, one in the basement close to a bedroom),1 garage...
i want to do lighting control (automatic control of outside and inside light on movement detection if in normal mode and stay close if in night mode)
i want the system to control my heating..i have electric baseboard heater that have external 220 volt thermostats..(i know i will have to replace them)
when the alrm system will be armed i want to lower the heat...when the system is disarmed or if i call from my phone i want the heat to coma back to normal level...
when i go to night mode i want to lower the heating..and i want the heat back when i wake up...
i will need to put some macro or stuff like that cause i want to control the lighting system in the home theater room so that when i use a remote contol the screen will go down, the light will dim and when i press play it will go to total darkness the if i press pause it will put a bit more light and when i press on stop light will slowly go to full so my eyes get used to the light..
if possible i really would like to have a control of the alarm system with the HA software..(zone status/armed status) even maybe arming by the software when i put the house in night mode....
if an alarm occur..for fire all light would go full on ..in case of burglar alarm all light start to flash randomly
i am an alarm technician ( i do acesss control system and system integration of alarm camras and access control in commercial building ) i dont do residential (last time i did it for the job was in 1994..) so i am out of the loop for that part...
i am an aprenctice in electric job..( 7800 out of 8000 hour done ) before i could pass the electrical knowledge test..( was routed to alarm when there was less job in electricity and i liked it better...)
so i am not afrraid of any electric job,any electronic job..and i have 7 computer running various stuff on them from win 98 for the kids game to linux for FTA dvr satellite listening with a dvb card...
can setup web/ftp/mail server easily so i am not afraid of computer either...(in fact i train electrician at night on assembly and configuration of a computer and installing win 2000 on it..)
Please give me some real info....not stuff like you will have trouble with base board heating.. i know i will have to fidle with it..
and what would be the best software to do all that, and the best controler..( i know cm11a but is there something more rugged then that?)
thanks
Petem.
Beverly Howard - 28 Feb 2004 02:21 GMT >> i want to do the following..(not limited to..) << You want to do a lot... and you are probably not going to find a package to meet your extensive and specific needs. (this is not a flame, just a statement of fact)
What you are describing is a combination of alarm and home automation and the two are generally not interlaced as you envision but, if connected, to only take basic actions such as flash all lights on and off.
Solution... put on a programming hat and start doing this yourself... for example, motion detecting X10 floods specifically for lights in combination with an X10 module to disable them when the conditions you specify exist in _addition_ to motion detectors that are associated with your alarm setup based on a controller that has activex or other programming possibilities.
Realistic solution... evaluate the time/cost/benefit of what you are asking for and consider starting with a much more basic setup... actually two basic setups... home automation and alarm... and when you fully understand and have both under control, then start linking them.

petem - 28 Feb 2004 13:10 GMT look like i will have to do it...
i was really under the impression that this was possible with allready available stuff..
ok lets open that vb6 training book i got last year and install it..
anyone have a list of the type of command i should send to a cm11a, or if i should send that stuff directly (not with a cm11a) i all ready have a pl513 device that can send x10 command from a oem device so interfacing this to a computer should give me more flexibility then a cm11a
but will need the exact sequence of x10 command to send and what shoudl i be listening to..
this will be a long journey! but what the heck i allways wanted a home that really reacted to the living people in it..

I'd suggest that you look at a few pieces of software which might help you rather than starting at the absolute bottom, that's what I've been doing.
Heyu is a nice simple interface to the CM-11 which runs on Linux (and some other systems). http://heyu.tanj.com/ it's no longer under active development, but there is a second version called heyu2 at http://heyu.tanj.com/heyu2/
Another choice, which does much more than just interface to X10, but is much more difficult to figure out is MisterHouse http://misterhouse.sourceforge.net/
This is a big wad of perl code which will run on just about anything including windows. It's got a lot of folks contributing stuff to it.
petem - 28 Feb 2004 19:17 GMT thanks i will read a bit..
anyways i move in the house in may.. then from there i will start playing around...
i think i will start with a simple x10 system then gradualy modify stuff to my liking..

That's something you start at the beginning of our winters, not the end, Petem. ;-) "Hurray, Hurray, the first of May, outdoor ________ begins today !" (I love doing this to french guys)
The HAI Omni does everything you want except the card access. If you end up going this route, email me from www.medi-call.ca , I'm looking into doing the dealer thing with them, maybe I can save you a buck or two and you'd make a heck of a technical resource... you're Montreal or thereabouts aren't you?
petem - 29 Feb 2004 13:35 GMT yup from montreal..
moving in repentigny on the first of may....
now there i wall be able to whatever outdoor....
> > i think i will start with a simple x10 system then gradualy modify stuff > to [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > make a heck of a technical resource... you're Montreal or thereabouts aren't > you? Spike - 29 Feb 2004 15:16 GMT Haha, I forgot about that. Everybody who's moving in Montreal moves on the first of May; it's like a ritual or something, isn't it? or it some beureaucratic municipal quirk like how we used to have to line up for new plates in Ont every February.
> yup from montreal.. > [quoted text clipped - 18 lines] > aren't > > you? petem - 01 Mar 2004 01:57 GMT Usely we all move on the first of July...Yup on Canada day..
but cause i bought a house, there is no renting contract and the law here in quebec used to be that a normal renting contract would start on the first of july and finish on the last of june every year....and even worst you could not have a contract longer then a year max 2 year.. Now its changing a bit every years so less and less people move on the first of july but it still the most part..
i didnt reread what i wrote in the last post, i was saying.... now in repentigny I will be able to do whatever outside... its a suburb..with large part still use for farming..(no animal just plant..so no smell) i am very close to the city limit to the east..(montreal is west of repentigny) so i am not too close of the big city..

Why not get the HAI Omni (or Omni Pro) alarm system? I have an Omni Pro and if you get their thermostat, it will adjust temperature based on whatever you program. I have it turn off the HVAC when my wife opens the window (so I don't pay to heat/AC the outside). It also does X10 too, so I can have it turn on the foyer lights when the front door opens, but only after dark. I never tried it, but I guess that if you have motion sensors for the alarm, you can program them to turn on the X10 switch when you enter the room and off after a period of time of no activity. I also have the RS232 port, so I can program it from the comfort of my PC, but the new version has an Eathernet port too. One thing...If you decide to get one of these, get the dealer version of the programming software, because some of the features are locked out of the customer version to make you keep coming back to the dealer for anything related to the alarm part.
I bought mine from Worthington Distribution (http://www.worthdist.com), but if like buying from Mr. Bass, I *think* he sells them too and may post a sales response regarding this.
I hope this helps...

I did use HAL2000 but changed to Homeseer. Not real happy with HS since it is a "TECHIE" type of system and if you don't know scripting you basically have to use the system AS IS. Most of the supplied software is BETA. The official released versions seem to be WAY BEHIND so if you want to have fixes or new functions you are forced into using BETA versions. Many of the plug-in's are very limited in the documentation and again if you are not a TECHIE, you will probably get very frustrated. There are a couple of plug-in's though that are excellent including documentation and support.
HAL2000 on the other hand is a take out of the box, install, add your devices, and run. No customizing is available but it does everything it says it does.
For me I would like to be somewhere in the middle of the two.
I currently have the following hardware:
HAI Omni Pro, Ocelot, BX24AHT, WGL800 all running on a 1300mhz 512m PC using XP Pro.
You can take a little tour of JEANNIE by going to my web site. There are a couple of links to view what is currently working.
Both HAL2000 and Homeseer can talk directly to the HAL Omni Pro security system. The Omni Pro also handles the fire detectors, HVAC, water supply and most of the automated lighting systems based on motion detection.
The Ocelot handles the use of X10 commands from a remote to turn the security system to NIGHT, OFF. I use a X10 remote and/or maxi controller to turn off all lights and set the HVAC to night mode. I can also control taking security camera captures either by motion detection or by using a hand held remote or from any internet connection. Visitors to the web site can see past captures or take an immediate one to see what is going on. ONLY OUTSIDE cameras are available.

I also run an Echolink system into our 146.70 repeater here in Louisville. Just in case you are looking for something to do in your SPARE TIME.

Take a look at Napco Gemini P9600, Pete. Many of my DIY clients integrate it with HomeSeer, HAL, etc. It's a fantastic panel.

Wow, "alt.home.automation" and comp.home.automation" with subject: "home automation project". C'mon, that's PRESUMED by the group. And as annoying as messages in comp.mail.sendmail with "sendmail question" subjects.
Put in useful subjects and 1) archives are more useful to others 2) more people will read it.
Thank you,
